How do I get in?
Becoming a dentist requires excellent academic qualifications. You will need at least five GCSEs, three good A-levels, ideally ABB, and you must do chemistry. Biology and maths are often also asked for. Similar Scottish Higher results are required, typically AAAAB. The degree course for dentists is called BDS or BChD and a course lasts five years; this is split into two years of pre-clinical studies followed by three years of clinical. Once the degree is completed graduates are able to apply to become a member of the General Dental Council; you can then legally practice as a dentist.
What job could I do?
Dentist - dentists start their work with a new patient by first learning about their oral history and then by examining the teeth. An increasing part of the dentist's work is preventative
Dental Hygienist - the main responsibility of the hygienist is to educate their patients about preventative measures to fight tooth decay and gum disease. They also clean and polish teeth
Dental Nurse - a dental nurse assists the dentist in the clinical treatment of patients and looks after patients before and after treatment. A dental nurse often undertakes clerical duties also, such as updating client records
Dental Technician - a dental technician prepares dental appliances from prescriptions given to them by the dentist. Dental technicians make prosthetics (dentures), crowns, orthodontics (braces) and can perform Maxillo-facial technology (jaw and facial reconstruction).

Earning potential?
Most people are unaware that dentists are self-employed and the amount of money they earn is directly related to how many patients they see, and how many of those are NHS patients. After expenses a dentist can expect to take home £40,000 a year, if not more. A trainee NHS dental nurse can expect to earn just over £6,000 a year. A senior dental nurse may earn £13,500.
