First/Third Person - It is best to use the third rather than the first person ('I')

Tense - People sometimes use the wrong tense/ E.g. the present tense in previous work experience. You should use the past tense for past achievements.

Too much text - Sometimes CVs have too much text to effectively decipher all the relevant information, and more importantly the benefits you can bring to an employer. You need to ensure that your CV is highly legible.

Bullet points - By using bullet points and reducing responsibilities/ achievements to one per line your CV is much more legible. It therefore has a far better chance of being read by an employer, giving you a better chance of an interview

Quantifying - It is advisable to indicate results (and quantify them) wherever possible in a CV to show an employer that you are the type of person who can achieve things.

Consider the employer - If you put yourself in the shoes of the employer it will help you write the things he wants to hear.

Professional Memberships - Are you a member of any Professional Bodies? If so you could create a separate header ' Professional Memberships' and state these.

Be honest with yourself - If you know deep down that your CV could be better, then do not send it off to employers. Instead, spend more time improving it or get an expert to do it for you.

Q: I have had many previous jobs, is it a disadvantage to list them all on my CV?

A: If you have had many previous jobs then all this work experience can be to your advantage. However, on the negative side, if you had many previous jobs listed rightly or wrongly an employer may interpret this as an indication that you are someone who will not stick around for long.

You have to judge each situation separately and weigh up the pros and cons depending on your work history and the job in question. If you think that a long list of previous jobs will be a disadvantage then you may need to rework your CV slightly. If you can still put across the many benefits you offer without blatantly advertising the fact that you have had many jobs then this could work to your advantage. One option you have is to re-work this section is to actually omit some of your less relevant previous jobs. There is no cast iron rule rules which says you have to include every last job on your CV.

Q. I know that I need to sell my skills in the profile but I am wary of adding too many impressive adjectives in case it sounds over the top. Should I tone it down a bit?

A. Strangely enough the vast majority of people undersell not oversell themselves in profiles. In fact, the vast majority of people usually write little more than 2 or 3 vague lines. Of course you need to be comfortable with whatever you write, and you should only highlight the traits and skills which you really do possess. However, if you have got a lot to offer an employer, really do possess the skills and traits he/she is looking for, and can back this up elsewhere in your CV then there is no reason why you should not shout about it. If you do not show off your skills then one of your competitors just might show off theirs, …and may pip you to the post in the process!
