How do I get in?

There are kinds of jobs in the armed forces - far too many to list them all here. Options in the Army, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy are not limited to front line troops; there are also many support roles. Qualifications required vary depending on the job role.

Army - You need to be between 16-25 to enlist in the Army as a soldier and you must be medically fit. To apply for a commission as an officer you must be between 17 and 9 months and 25 years old. You can undertake a Regular Commission for service up to age 55, or a Short Commission for 3 years. You can go in as a soldier and then switch to another role. Most officers joining the Army have a university degree.

Royal Air Force (RAF) - You join the RAF as either a Commissioned Officer, a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) Aircrew or as an airman/airwoman. Depending on the role you need to be 16, 17 or 18. Qualifications required vary, for example, to join Aircraft Engineering as a Technic ian you need at least 4 GCSE passes but none to join as a mechanic.

Royal Navy - You need to be between 16 and 32 to join the Navy. You don't need qualifications to join as a Rating (not an officer) although for some jobs GCSEs are required. To join the Royal Marines you have to be between 16 and 27 and pass their selection test, interview and medical examination. To join as an officer you need to be 17. There are also roles that require GCSEs, A-levels and a UK degree.

A regimented lifestyle and conformity are not for everyone

You will be away from your home and family for months at a time


Careers in West Yorkshire Earning potential?

Your pay will depend entirely on which Service you are in, your specific job and rank. Not surprisingly the more senior you are the better the pay. If you are posted abroad or to London you receive an extra allowance to compensate.
