Job Specification - Software Engineer/Consultant

 

Background

 

Drive Computer Services Ltd and D&H Computer Services Ltd are part of The ERP Group Ltd and are based in Ossett, West Yorkshire. Both organisations were established in 1982 and since then have specialised in ERP solutions for the food, chemicals, metal process, and pharmaceutical industries with their products BLISS and MARPACS. Customers include Kuwait Petroleum (lubricants), International Fish Canners (fish canning - John West), Macphie of Glenbervie (food service), G R Lane (over the counter pharmaceuticals, e.g. Kalms and Olbas Oil), Corus Engineering Steels and Firth Rixon Group, The team is small, well established, experienced and works very closely with the company\'s customers, some having been with Drive & D&H for over 20 years.

 

BLISS & MARPACS were originally developed using Cobol and DB/C (similar to C++), modern technologies such as PHP, SQL and Java are now central to their future and these technologies form part of the organisations development environment called \"Cougar\".

 

Job Description

 

The business now wishes to recruit a qualified and motivated individual to join the BLISS team and assist initially in a Help Desk customer support role with potential for moving into customer project and site management responsibilities.

 

It is envisaged that candidates will have a number of well developed core skills, these will include:

  • Cobol in a Unix environment
  • PHP or another scripting language

 

In addition, some working knowledge of the following will be very useful:

  • SQL Server, MySQL & MSSQL
  • UNIX & Linux
  • Java
  • Windows
  • Implementation & support of manufacturing/logistic business applications

 

The successful candidate will work directly with the existing Support Team and Project Managers on a mix of general support, strategic development work and customer projects. Direct contact with customers and development of good working relationships with their staff will be an important part of the role. The job will involve working in a small team with personal responsibility for their own time and task management.

 

Full training will be given to develop an understanding of the BLISS and MARPACS products. The candidate will be expected to invest time in self education as required in order to acquire the necessary skills needed.

 

The position will offer significant opportunities for personal career growth, the direction of which will depend largely upon the individual\'s abilities to manage people and tasks. A personal training plan will be developed with the successful candidate to assist his or her development in these areas.

 

Initially, the successful candidate will be expected to help improve customer service working closely with the organisation\'s customers and its web based call logging system.

 

The position will initially be office based, salary will be negotiable with up to 26 days holiday, based on length of service, plus bank holidays. In addition the company will supply a laptop, mobile phone and whatever other technology is needed to be successful. The successful candidate will be required to use their own transport for visits to customer sites and will be required to maintain a reliable vehicle. Travel expenses based on current Inland Revenue rules will be provided. The role may progress to encompass home or on customer site working with occasional overnight stays.  .

 

The initial job offer and employment contract will be subject to review after 6 months.
